Question: I’m debating on what camera to get and for the price. Right now there is a sale going on for Sony 7ii for $1,000 with lens 28-70 mm and the Sony 6300 is at $1,149 with lens 18-135mm. What do you guys recommend?

+Vincent Medina 7ii, couldn't be happier as I have tried a6300 but I just prefer the 7ii (not with the same lens tho!!) ^^ better grip, bigger, ff, autofocus is really good enough, MORE BUTTONS, nicer viewfinder. Depends on what u need it tho, I'd buy a6300 for sure if I wanted it for travel of if focusing on video I guess.. It was kind of fate tho.. I actually ordered the a6300 but the replied that it was the last one and defected so they can't sell it to me.. and I didn't wanna buy from another buyer cuz his was the cheapest sooooo I said welp I guess I'm buying the ff :)

Both are excellent - the Sony a7ii gives you a bit better detail, especially in lower light but the size and weight of the a6300 is excellent and so lightweight you might be more likely to always have that with you.

I used to do professional photography shooting with a Nikon D750 and the full kitten-caboodle, but I’ve also been vlogging and doing content creation for over a year now and wanna make my kit a lot more travel-friendly and compact. The a6300 is excellent for photography - my full review here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEkuc8X39kQ Also for video do you want 4k video- a6300 and if you go a6500 you get stabilized video too. Stabilized sensor is nice because you can throw any lens on, you don't have to worry about having an OSS lens. Hope that helps!

They do - I would lean toward the a7ii - it's going to do better and for portraits, you can get a lovely shallow depth of field more easily. Honestly though a6300 would do well too. If your budget is tight you will find much more affordable lenses if you stay with the crop.

Hi Scott. I'm looking to buy one of those cameras. I'd like to have the ability for good astro photography and also do some night city shooting. Like in a bar/restaurant without flash or out on the streets. That means good high ISO. Which one is better at high ISO ? A7ii is full frame but a6300/6500 have a more modern sensor with different structure to let mor light. So can i kindly ask if you can make an ISO test of those cameras ? Also low light autofocus. Thanks!!!

The a6500 is also a premium and a better all around camera, with many more futures such as touch screen. Don't compare it to the a6000, the a6500 it's in a different league. Since I mostly use the EP Z 18 - 105mm G lens, I went for the a6500 and the added features was a bonus. Love that 18 - 105 lens. The focus is so amazing on the a6500, that it alone makes it worth it, not to mention 4K and weather seal etc. The a6500 is a much better value.

Definitely wait for the A7iii, because for portraits you need full frame, and the A7ii doesn't do eye tracking well with shallow depth of field. There are rumors that the A7iii will get the focus system of the A7R II, which is amazing news. I am also doing the same by the way, waiting for my sytem switch from the D750, when the A7iii is out. :)

In this case i whould reccomend sony a7 because its better for photography, for video they are almost the same. The key difference is that a7 has full frame senser. There are GREAT workarounds for the overheating issue of the A6300, the best of which is buying a "Cage" and mounting it in it! "D|Cage" (from D|Focus) was a bit expensive but the cheapest I could find. The A6300's Mag.Alloy body does a great job of wicking away the heat BUT it's tiny!.. so the cage acts as an improved heatsink (it's drilled "swiss cheese" plate) also ALWAYS pull the LCD away from the body too! I Have shot 4K in the sun (90F day and got a heat indicator finally but it kept shooting!)

Yes that's certainly a good suggestion to solve that issue

do make a video on performance between two lens on a6300. there is no native 85mm lens for a6300. compare SEL50F18 and SEL55F18Z ( later produce 82.5mm equivalent and f2.7) . does SEL55F18Z perform any better for bokeh?

not available in our region any e mount aps-c prime 85mm lens. i want to buy a6300 with 16-70mm zeiss and one more lens. not sure which one. not having any interchangeable lens camera before and only cheap point and shoot and often prefer cellphone camera like samsung s4 and s5. now i want proper camera and not sure how much is the angle of view of each focal length. for second lens i have two option in mind. 1: 10-18mm and 2: 50mm f1.8. in our region these products are on pre order. my focus is to use camera for landscapes on holidays and portraits. does 16mm is enough for wide shoots and make use of panorama for more wider shoot instead and opt for 50mm prime? or 70mm at f 4 of 16-70mm zeiss produce equivalent bokeh effect of 50mm f 2 lens? which second lens you prefer for shooting a group photo in a room in parties to portraits?

+PhotoRec TV has it been significantly improved regarding tech.specs? I wonder if i should buy this camera for everyday use ( because Nikon D5100 with my Sigma 17-50 is a bit heavy) instead of Canon G7x. I know, they are from different classes, but still.

a6000 here in the USA is an awesome value and price. There is now the a6300 which is a little more expensive.

I understand the A6300 is magnesium. I think you were confused with the A6000 when you said "all plastic construction."

Hey Lauryn
Hey Lauryn

Right now I'm considering getting a second body because the one I have now has me against a wall in terms of doing one man band and autofocus. Right now I'm between a 80D (DAT autofocus and I have a 60D) or a Sony. I don't know which Sony to compare yet but it seems like maybe one of these...but I'm not sure.

The eyecup alone makes me never want an a6000/a6300 again, I had an a6000 and that eyecup is stupidly obtrusive if you ever use camera bags

+drivecancel I have owned the A6000 for a couple years, just sold it, the eye cup did get caught on stuff so I removed it, easy. I dont use eye cups. I got an A7ii now and love it.

Not every camera is obnoxious in that way like the a6xxx cameras. I don't know why this is so hard to understand, own the camera first then come back and tell me it isn't annoying. The eyecup rubs on clothes, it gets in the way when putting it in a bag. It is just bad.

+Wesley Jordan I'm not the one being hyper sensitive over a YouTube comment, go see a shrink. I think the a6000 eyecup is bad, it's a barrier to the portability of the camera due to how easily it gets caught, no buying a bigger bag is not the solution, nor is taking it off which makes using the viewfinder an inferior experience. Now get over it, good day.

Hi, Thanks for a nice review, however in general it is very difficult to compare these two cameras. The 4K option on the A6300 makes the IQ so much better and open doors for creative post works which is not possible with the lower resolution option. An in-body stabiliser in the A6300 would make this little gem even better..an MK2 perhaps???

Vor 2 years

In IBIS probably needs a bigger housing. Also it seems that the a7 series is for professionals and the a6300 for prosumers/semiprofessionals.  The a6300 has good features but also bad ergonomics and limited reliability due the known issues compared to the more expensive camera and by far compared to a dslr or professional videocamera.

Vor 2 years

The cameras are comparable as they offer similar features but there are tradeoffs. I'd love to see a stabilised sensor but that's going to push the cost up a fair bit I'd imagine
