Did anyone study the impact of salinity of the Mediterranean waters entering the desert lake, evaporating and leaving salt behind? The lake water would become increasingly salty making for pretty brackish waters. Salt would then deposit on the beaches rendering them with white salt slabs. In my opinion, only fresh water would do for the project and there is none around in that region.

A lot of coal mines will be closing soon. Some of them have those giant excavators that are designed to dig very cost effectively. Those marvel machines are going to cut for scrap metal. They could be used to dig that channel instead.

Adding salt water to an area with extreme temperature like those found within the Qattara Depression will just leave you over time with huge salt flats and another dead sea and the very strong possibility of contaminating sources' of local freshwater.

I am not convinced that the idea of digging a canal using nukes is crazy. My only concern is radiation. But I think it's possible today to create a clean thermonuclear chain explosion that would dig a canal.

If a canal were built to the Depression (without the admittedly crazy nukes option, but rather conventional means), this seems like a pretty good idea actually; wouldn't the evaporation from the new inland sea act as a huge organic desalinization mechanism, and cause levels of rain to increase, halting, and maybe even beginning to reverse desertification? Any expert opinion on this (I'm obviously not any meteorologist or climate expert of any sort). And without any thought even of opportunities regarding fishing, a huge new natural harbour for docking, the potential hydro power would seem to be huge. Again, this isn't anything I'm qualified to really comment on, so anyone who knows anything about hydro power, I'd love to read the take of an expert.

Tesla's "Boring Company" could bore tunnels, using a couple ore more machines. I would build the Mediterranean Sea station first and then shut the valves, to stop any possibility of tunnel flooding while under construction. Are they sure that this lake wouldn't be too warm for marine life and possibly make it very humid in the area? We wouldn't want it to turn into another "Dead Sea".
